Workplace Bulletins

Workplace was an all-in-one organizational communication app built by Meta that combined chat, video, groups and intranet with the work tools that teams already use. Workplace has 7 million users globally, and was a direct competitor with Microsoft Teams. I led the design for the Integrations team. The team’s mission was to amplify organizational communications across third party work tools like Slack, Zoom and Workday.

Role

Embedded product designer supporting the Workplace integrations team.

Problem

Workplace had high adoption among organization communication teams, but sometimes less than 30% adoption among end users. End users preferred to work in their favorite collaboration tools like Slack and MS Teams, and would miss important company updates on Workplace.

Communication teams would forward content to these platforms through integrations, but they were missing a good, centralized way to curate content and oversee the sharing of it to other platforms.

Goals

Our goal was to increase how frequently communication leaders shared workplace content with their employee base, thereby increasing the viewership of content by end users.

Solution

We built a tool that let communication teams curate content on Workplace, and then organize and share it with integrated platforms, including digital signage in office spaces via AppSpace, all from one interface.

Process highlights

We called the feature "Collections," in our early concepts, which we ended up changing based on feedback.

Concept testing

I collaborated closely with our user researcher to build out a Bulletins concept prototype and research plan. We tested the concept early with multiple communication leader participants.

The admin interface let team’s control who had permissions to create and share Bulletins to external surfaces.

Design principles

We developed a set of design principles to guide our solution, since any solution would involve many different users sharing many different types of contents to different platforms, e.g., Prioritize transparency and control for admins over what content is being shared to each platform.
